Engrossed for Chrome: Privacy Policy
Last updated 27 October 2026
The short version. Engrossed reads the article on the tab you click it on, on your own computer. It has no account, no servers and no analytics, and it collects nothing. By default nothing leaves your computer at all. The only exceptions are voices you choose yourself, described below.
When it runs
Only when you click the Engrossed button, and only on that tab. It cannot see any other tab, and it cannot see any page until you click. It does not run in the background on the sites you visit.
What is stored, and where
Everything is kept in your browser's own extension storage, on your computer:
- Your place in each article: the article's address (with tracking parameters removed), which card you were on, and the first few words of that card, so your place can be found again if the article changes.
- Your reading preferences, such as theme, text size and card size. If you have turned on Chrome Sync, Chrome syncs these to your other computers through your Google account. Your reading positions and your ElevenLabs key are never synced.
- The sprint timer, so a sprint can carry on into the next article.
- Your ElevenLabs API key, only if you add one. It stays on this computer.
Removing the extension removes all of it.
What can leave your computer, and only if you choose it
- ElevenLabs voices. If you add your own ElevenLabs API key and choose an ElevenLabs voice, the text of each card being read aloud is sent to ElevenLabs, together with your key, so ElevenLabs can turn it into speech. Nothing else is sent: not the page address, not other cards, not your reading history. That processing is covered by ElevenLabs' own privacy policy. Remove the key in Engrossed's settings and nothing more is sent.
- Chrome's online voices. Some of the voices Chrome offers for reading aloud are online voices, and they are labelled as such. If you pick one, Chrome sends the text to Google to be spoken, under Google's privacy policy. Engrossed's automatic voice choice is always one that runs on your computer.
What is not collected
No personal information, no email address, no browsing history, no analytics, telemetry, crash reports, advertising identifiers or cookies. There are no third-party libraries that collect any of it. The one library Engrossed includes, Mozilla Readability, runs entirely on your computer.
Children
Engrossed is suitable for all ages and collects nothing from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
